Wellness has decided to recall some of its canned cat foods. Some formulas (flavors) of Wellness canned cat foods might contain “less than adequate levels” of thiamine (aka Vitamin B1).
I wouldn’t worry too much if your cat has been eating these foods because the changes of developing a B1 deficiency is remote, even if your cat was eating only Wellness for weeks on end. (Still, this is a great example of how important it is to rotate the foods your dogs and cats eat.)
To read more about the recall, read the letter from Wellness CEO Tim Callahan. There is additional info on the FDA website.
The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine regulates medications for livestock and companion animals. It also monitors the safety of dog and cat food. All FDA recalls are considered voluntary because the FDA does not have the authority to recall food products. Instead it relies on the cooperation of food manufacturers.
