Recall of SportMix dry kibble cat & dog foods

The maker of SportMix cat & dog foods has decided to recall some of its foods because tests of some batches indicate “levels of aflatoxin that exceed acceptable limits”. Aflatoxin is produced by molds that grow on corn and other grains. (Locally, this brand is only sold at Tractor Supply Company, Walmart, & a few farm stores that focus more on farm animal feed than companion animals.)

Contact your vet immediately if you see the following symptoms in your companions. These are common signs of aflatoxin poisoning lethargy, sluggishness, loss of appetite, nausea (with or without vomiting), diarrhea, and/or jaundice (yellowish tint to the eyes, gums, or skin due to liver damage). It’s always helpful for your vet to know your cat or dog’s dietary history. If you worry that their food is making them ill, it can be helpful (for your vet and the pet food manufacturer) for you to take a picture of the pet food label, including the lot number.

To read more about the recall, visit the announcement on the FDA website.

The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine not only regulates medications for livestock and companion animals, it also monitors the safety of pet foods. All FDA recalls are considered voluntary because the FDA does not have the authority to recall food products. Instead it relies on the cooperation of food manufacturers.
