I found the option of trying olive oil from a Dr. on You Tube. So I tried it on my elderly kitty. He had kinda flaky skin and large mats on his back. They formed when I was out of town for a couple of months. A family member took care of him. But I do not think she brushed him like she said she did. Anyway…. It’s day 3 and the smaller mats have fallen out. Still hoping the big ones do soon. The other thing I noticed, the olive oil has made his flaky dry itchy skin go away. And honestly, his coat looks wonderful— except where the olive oil is saturated into his fur and skin. He kinda looks like Bill the cat or he’s been in shock therapy. LOL. Here’s hoping the big mats fall out.
I do not want to shave him.

Thank you so much for this article! This worked for our eight-year-old swirl girl who had a big nasty mat for over a year and was developing two more. She is very sensitive to touch so we couldn’t cut them out without risk of injury to ourselves and her. It took about a month for the olive oil to work its magic, but she is now a much happier, more comfortable kitty, and the beauty of her fur has been restored! We tried using a syringe twice, but found with further applications that it was easier to do with our fingers, despite her not wanting to be touched. Again, thanks for posting this helpful article! I wanted others to know this works!

This post was a life-saver! I used both olive oil and coconut oil with enough success that now my cat is mat-free. Weird how this isn't listed most anywhere else as an option for removing mats. And he didn't seem to mind the oil as much as he minded anything else I tried. I was going to have to trap him with a TNR trap to get him to the vet for a shave, and then this post came my way. Thank you so much.
