That's GREAT! Good idea to use the dropper instead of syringe. More people have THOSE around the house of course.I'm sorry that he licked himself so much to remove them. When I've used it, I've never seen cats lick the oil. They never seem to even notice the oil. I dunno why. Anyway, HOORAY for a non-traumatic mat removal remedy.

WOW! I spent hours reading this thread skeptical that anything could work. My cat has had mats for a while. He is old, 16 and even just walking 2 feet outside scares him so taking him in a car and getting him groomed stressed me out for him to no end. I would cry thinking about the pain he is in. I've tried every type of little razor and his hair is just so thick (ragamuffin). The syringe came in the mail today but I ordered tincture bottles bc i had an intuitive hit. The syringe didn't really work for me but the tincture bottle did. I gave him rescue remedy and treats, then went to town!! He had the same amount on each side. Within not even 2 hours, he has licked and removed the entire one side of him. He is meowing in a cute high pitched sound, following me around and being so sweet. I felt like he had given up completely on grooming himself but now he is just licking and purring. He doesn't even seem to mind me getting close or helping him rub the olive oil in. I'm so grateful. I'd love to send a donation, Kari. Thank you so much.

I don't see why not. The oily spot might collect more dirt/dust until the mat falls off? You could try using just a small dab at first until you know.

I have an outside long haired kitten who has horrible mats that I can't get out with everything else I tried, is it okay to put olive oil on him if he's going back outside?
